The Telecommunications Division provides a broad range of telephone services to County departments. This past year, each member of the team played a critical role in the successful relocation of County staff in several major moves that occurred during 2003, despite significant time constraints, rescheduling at the last minute and a variety of factors beyond their control. The team's greatest challenge was the restoration of telephone service to over 350 employees at the County's Health Services and Human Resources Agencies who were moving back to the County's 1400 Emeline facility after being temporarily housed off-site. This effort required approximately 3,000 hours of dedicated labor over a period of many months, saving the County tens of thousands of dollars that would have been paid in contract labor costs. Many of the tasks related to this move were extremely complex and had never been attempted by County employees on such a large project. However, the team was meticulous and exacting in their performance, and their results were extremely accurate. In addition to their technical skills, team members were consistently gracious, smiling and willing to ensure that customer service was also of primary importance throughout the process.

The second group sharing the silver award includes County staff from various departments working on the Mobile Data Computer Project, including:
Melissa McCuiston Tammie Weigl Alex Kiener Sgt. Phil Wowak Karen Gillette
Sgt. Phil Wowak of the Sheriff's Office
Melissa McCuiston of the Sheriff's Office
Alex Kiener of the General Services Department
Karen Gillette of the Information Services Department
Tammie Weigl of the Information Services Department

As part of the Mobile Data Computer project, computer screens, modems, software and antennae were installed in patrol vehicles, while receivers and transmitters were established throughout the county. This service enhancement has enabled deputies to retrieve law enforcement information immediately while providing them with direct access to essential state and federal databases from their vehicles. Implementation of this highly technical project required superior leadership and management skills on the part of each member of the team. An in-depth knowledge of the technology was essential during the installation of equipment and the programming of computer applications to meet stringent state standards as well as to provide training to users. The enhanced availability of critical data has increased efficiency and safety when stopping a vehicle, entering a building, locating a suspect or preparing to make an arrest. It has also increased the efficiency of Sheriff's dispatchers by allowing them to focus on emergency calls from the public and more effectively monitor minute-by-minute developments in the field that impact public safety and the safety of officers. The perseverance and leadership skills demonstrated by each member of the team resulted in a project that greatly enhances public safety services provided by the Sheriff's Office on a countywide basis, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Members of the General Services Department's Building Maintenance Crew were responsible for disassembling the Superior Court's aging Department 8 modular unit in front of the Courts Building and preparing a new modular unit for use. Due to unforeseen circumstances, a project that would typically require several months to complete had to be finished in only two short weeks in order for the facility to be ready to conduct critical court business. Not only did crew members have to contend with an already extremely tight schedule and inclement weather, matters were further complicated when the delivery of the new replacement unit was delayed. The crew did what it took to achieve their goal of completing the job on schedule, including facilitating the work of other departments and outside vendors involved in the project. While faced with an incredibly tight time line, members of the team somehow maintained a positive attitude and exhibited the kind of teamwork, humor and dedication that inspired the confidence needed to get the job done.
