On any given day, members of the Detention Nursing staff provide care and treatment for adults incarcerated in the County's Main Jail, Blaine Street Women's Facility, and the Rountree medium and minimum facility. Working as a nurse in a correctional environment requires an extraordinary dedication to the profession, a willingness to work with individuals with significant untreated medical and mental health problems, and a commitment to compassionate patient care. Detention Nursing staff often see patients for medical conditions that have gone untreated in the past and which are now at a crisis level. Nurses in the Detention Medical Unit have consistently worked extra hours and given up personal time off in order to cover vacancies and shortfalls in staffing. Their dedication ensures that the County is able to provide the mandated level of personnel required to keep this work unit operational. These professionals provide outstanding, highly skilled nursing care for patients and consistently go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that the needs of patients are met.

SILVER - Betsy McCarty

While superbly managing the challenges of a $16 million Public Health Program and working on issues associated with bioterrorism preparedness, Betsy McCarty volunteered to assist the Detention Medical Unit address serious concerns regarding nurse staffing levels. After many years away from the clinical field, Betsy took on the challenge of bringing herself and her Public Health Nursing colleagues up to date on clinical protocols, treatments, and medication management. Betsy served as a shining role model for the other staff to assure that inmates receive high quality medical and nursing services in the face of severe staffing shortages. Betsy has also provided strong encouragement and leadership support to the current Detention management staff concerning numerous other organizational and work flow improvement projects. Betsy is truly deserving of special recognition for her extraordinary accomplishments, reaching out with her upbeat and cheerful "can do" attitude to inspire others to excellence in providing essential health services to all county residents.

The Health Education Unit is being recognized both for their tireless efforts to rid Santa Cruz County of tobacco use through education and prevention efforts and for the development and success of the HSA Employee Wellness Program.  Through the work of HSA staff and the members of the Tobacco Education Coalition, in August, 2003, the Santa Cruz Seaside Company, operator of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, began prohibiting smoking on the Boardwalk. This is a significant achievement towards protecting the health of the community
at-large.  The HSA Employee Wellness Program began in November, 2002, with a goal of helping HSA employees eat more healthfully and exercise more. Activities have included Buddies on Breaks, Weight Watchers at Work, yoga classes, healthy holiday recipes, chair massages, and providing a bike-to-work breakfast site. This program has been extremely successful, is supported by HSA senior staff management, and enhances the lives of HSA employees. Each member of the unit deserves recognition for their efforts to promote the health of the community and County staff.
