Sgt. Scoles has been employed by the County Sheriff's Office for 18 years, and is currently working as a Detention Sergeant. Throughout his career, Sgt. Scoles has gone above and beyond the scope of County employment to provide assistance to disadvantaged members of our community and their families. Sgt. Scoles has demonstrated his compassion and generosity by providing treats to children visiting their parents in detention facilities on holidays. As an example, to the delight of children and parents alike, on Christmas Eve Sgt. Scoles and his wife Barbara provided decorated bags filled with chocolate and candy canes along with a card with a $10 gift certificate to a local toy store. Sgt. Scoles consistently treats inmates, co-workers and members of the community with dignity and respect. He certainly deserves the County's highest commendation for the outstanding manner in which he does his job, and for his selfless devotion to members of the Santa Cruz County community.

Facing the need to safely remedy the causes of overcrowding in the County's
42-bed Juvenile Hall facility, one of the solutions was to create an effective Alternative to Detention program involving careful and considered use of home supervision and electronic monitoring. Team members work seamlessly to provide supervision to youth in the home detention program and support to families keeping teens in their homes as they go through the court process. Each member of the team possesses extraordinary skills which allow them to navigate through distinct and diverse communities where language and cultural landscape differ. They also work effectively with parents, the Court, probation officers, school officials, counselors and employers to bring about a connection with positive experiences. As a result of the outstanding devotion and dedication demonstrated by each member of the team, 98% of youthful offenders have not committed any new offenses while awaiting the resolution of their cases. In addition, the County has realized significant savings associated with the reduction in the number of youth detained at Juvenile Hall.
