DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to perform skilled and specialized work related to the printing and reproduction of a variety of forms documents, brochures and other printed materials; and to do other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Duplicating Equipment Operator I is the trainee and first working level in the series. Incumbents initially work under close supervision learning and performing more routine functions related to bindery operations and operating rapid copy equipment. As experience is gained incumbents perform a broader range of duties and are normally advanced to the Duplicating Machine Operator II level after one year.

Duplicating Equipment Operator II is the second working level in the series. Incumbents independently perform various functions related to bindery operations and rapid copy machine operations, maintenance and supplies; and under supervision learn and perform printing press operations.

Duplicating Equipment Operator III is the third and advanced working level class in the series. Incumbents are assigned to this classification only when they have mastered pre press, press and post press functions. Incumbents also provide technical assistance to customers; orient, train and/or assist new and less experienced operators; and may perform rapid copy machine operations.

TYPICAL TASKS

Operates various offset printing presses and/or rapid copy machines; products may be in various sizes, multi color and/or various types of paper; pre press duties include electrostatic plate making, preparing lithographic negatives, exposing and developing metal printing plates, determine proper colors or additives to meet requirements of paper, cutting paper to exact sizes, assisting customers by providing information about available duplication services and basic cost estimates; performs post press operations using various bindery equipment to produce a finished product; performs regular inspection and cleaning of equipment; may orient, train and/or assist new and less experienced operators; may perform duties of Mail Clerk as needed; may prepare work orders and price out jobs during supervisor's absences.

Duplicating Equipment Operator II One year experience equivalent to the classification of Duplicating Equipment Operator I.

Duplicating Equipment Operator III Two years experience equivalent to the class of Duplicating Equipment Operator II.
