SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to conduct mapping, spatial analysis, programming and support duties and to participate in the development, installation, integration, training, documentation, testing, and maintenance of the County's Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) and database applications; to evaluate user requirements and develop technical solutions; and to do other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the GIS Analyst series. Incumbents perform routine computer mapping, data creation, and spatial analysis activities. Work is typically performed under direct supervision, although after initial training period incumbents may work independently to perform more routine tasks, while continuing to receive technical direction and assistance for new situations or more complex tasks. This is the first working level classification in the series. It is distinguished from the next higher class of GIS Analyst II in that incumbents of the former typically receive direct supervision, rely on higher-level staff for technical direction and to prioritize tasks, and exercise limited judgment on implementation issues. This class is distinguished from the GIS Technician series in that the former analyzes customer GIS needs and determines the best method of meeting those needs using the appropriate application of GIS layers in conjunction with databases to provide a full range of GIS services; the latter is focused on creating and maintaining map layers using automated GIS tools, but does not utilize GIS layers or databases for GIS analysis. Errors in providing user support and guidance may have significant impact on unit image.
