DEFINITION

Under general supervision, perform maintenance work as a specialist and a lead worker in areas such as landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, irrigation, electrical, and equipment operation and maintenance; plan, assign and review the work of staff performing a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks, grounds, structures and equipment; and to do other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Park Maintenance Worker III is the specialist and lead worker level in the Park Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the higher class of Park Maintenance Supervisor which has full supervisory responsibility for scheduling, assigning and prioritizing the day-to-day construction, maintenance and repair activities of parks, grounds, structures, and equipment. Park Maintenance Worker III is distinguished from the lower class of Park Maintenance Worker II which performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled tasks, which may include guiding and monitoring unskilled or semi-skilled workers but does not include specialist and lead worker responsibility. Park Maintenance Worker II's may perform a variety of skilled tasks within specialty areas, where Park Maintenance Worker III may be assigned to a single specialty requiring a higher level of skill.

TYPICAL TASKS

Plans and assigns work to crew members; trains subordinates in the procedures of the work; assures the quality of the work performed by subordinates; assures completion of work based on the schedules provided; assists in the evaluation of assigned subordinates; maintains records of work performed; regularly performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks, grounds, structures and equipment; works from plans, blueprints and specifications; makes rough estimates of labor and materials needs; serves as specialist in an area such as landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, irrigation, electrical, or equipment operation/maintenance. Participates in the work of the crew performing tasks such as: tractor work for grading, ditching, backfilling, rotor tilling and moving sand and gravel; installation and repair of sprinkler, irrigation and water systems with plastic and metal pipe using various sprinkler head types and time clocks; construction work such as carpentry, masonry, electrical installation and plumbing; maintenance of park and recreation facilities including, but not limited to restrooms, trails, roads, picnic tables and benches, playground equipment; planting and maintaining lawns, shrubs, trees and other plant life.
