DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to order, receive, inspect, store and issue parts for automobiles, trucks and road construction equipment; and to do other work as required.

TYPICAL TASKS

Orders, inspects and stores parts for dump trucks, pickup trucks, automobiles, cranes, fork lifts, graders, backhoes, street sweepers, bulldozers, loaders, rollers, and other heavy and light road construction equipment; obtains needed parts from local suppliers and selected vendors at lowest possible cost; issues and delivers parts as requested by mechanics; issues substitute parts as required, based on knowledge of interchangeability; contacts manufacturers, wrecking yards and other sources to obtain parts for old or obsolete equipment; assists supervising mechanic and mechanics in determining the correct parts for rebuilding and modification of equipment; determines proper stock levels for commonly used parts; schedules ordering of parts to avoid "stockout" situations; picks up parts and materials from local suppliers and sources in nearby areas;  maintains inventory control records on stock issued, and computes cost of labor and materials on each repair using computer maintenance program; tracks parts using computer program; maintains parts room and stock areas in neat and orderly condition; checks fuel and oil levels; conducts spot and yearly physical inventory; may provide vacation or other temporary relief for other classes as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of standard automotive and truck parts and accessories;
  • Working knowledge of the proper use of parts manuals and supply catalogs;
  • Working knowledge of methods for organizing and storing automotive and equipment parts;
  • Some knowledge of inventory control methods and procedures
  • Some knowledge of parts and accessories for large trucks or heavy equipment.
  • Safe materials and parts handling practices.


Ability to:

  • Quickly obtain proper parts needed for repair and maintenance of a wide variety of road construction equipment and trucks;
  • Exercise resourcefulness and ingenuity in gathering information from parts manuals, manufacturers and other sources to determine acceptable substitutes for rare and obsolete parts;
  • Recognize related parts needed in addition to the parts requested for certain types of repairs;
  • Estimate future supply needs and maintain adequate stock levels;
  • Calculate labor and material costs from tables and invoices;
  • Maintain accurate records both computerized and manual;
  • Follow written and oral directions;
  • Establish cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Learn to use the required software;
  • Lift items weighing up to 75 pounds;
  • Operate forklift for moving large pallets or deliveries;
  • Read and understand parts manuals, both printed and computerized;
  • Drive vehicles, such as automobiles, light duty trucks;
  • Distinguish colors, such as color-coded wire and the color of fluids;
  • Hear and distinguish various sounds in noisy environments and operation of equipment;
  • Use computer and internet to find parts and/or vendors for equipment repair.


Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Two years of experience in ordering, issuing and storing automotive and truck parts, including some experience dealing with parts for large trucks or heavy equipment.

Special Requirements/Conditions:

License Requirement: Possession of a valid California class C driver license.

Obtain forklift operators license within six months from hire.

Special Working Conditions: Exposure to: variable temperatures and weather conditions; confined work spaces; heights, such as on ladders and stairs; high levels of noise; infections which might cause chronic disease or death; electrical hazards; dust and silica dust; unpleasant odors; and, the possibility of experiencing burns, bodily injury, exposure to non ionizing radiation, and contact with toxic substances or chemical irritants.
