DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to take and process a variety of x-rays; and to do other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a full working level class requiring State certification as a Radiologic Technologist. This class is assigned to a small non-emergency x-ray section and is responsible for obtaining x-rays for diagnostic purposes. A majority of the incumbent's time is spent in participating in x-ray procedures workload that is predominately chest and musculoskeletal. The work involves performing x-ray procedures on corpses and other Coroner cases.

This class is distinguished from X-ray Technician (Chest/Musculoskeletal) in that the latter is limited to performing only chest and musculoskeletal x-ray procedures and performs clerical work in support of the section. This class is distinguished from Chief Radiologic Technologist in that the latter has on-going supervisory and coordination responsibility for the x-ray section.

TYPICAL TASKS

Takes chest, musculoskeletal and other x-rays; determines appropriate exposure factors based upon age, height, weight, portion of body involved and degree of penetration required; handles and loads digital x-ray flat panel detector; properly collimates, aligns equipment and makes exposures to produce the best digital diagnostic x-rays images with minimum radiation exposure to the patient; observes all prescribed safety standards during x-ray procedures; adjusts image contrast and density using digital radiographic (DR) software to enhance image detail; cleans equipment and makes minor repairs; performs x-ray procedures on cadavers; administers electrocardiograms; maintains paper and electronic medical records; electronically submits radiographic exams for dictation and ensures x-ray reports of work performed are properly delivered and archived; performs routine film room maintenance and purging as needed.
