DEFINITION

Under general supervision, to participate in and supervise the activities at several sites of a small non-emergency x-ray section; and to do other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a single position class with responsibility for the operation of a small x- ray section and the performance of x-ray procedures requiring licensure as a Radiologic Technologist. A majority of the incumbent's time is spent participating in x- ray procedures workload that is predominately chest and musculo-skeletal. The work involves performing x-ray procedures on corpses and other Coroner cases.

TYPICAL TASKS

Schedules, assigns and reviews the work of subordinates; prepares employee performance evaluations; instructs new employee in departmental and unit policies, operating procedures, operation of equipment, and safety standards and procedures; participates in the training of subordinates; takes chest, musculo-skeletal and other x-rays; places patients in best position to obtain requested x-ray view(s); selects and loads film cassettes, aligns equipment, determines exposure factors and makes exposures so as to produce the best diagnostic film with minimum radiation risk to patient; develops exposed film; cleans equipment and makes necessary minor repairs; confers with physicians, subordinates and other staff concerning x-ray films, techniques and procedures; orders and maintains inventory of films, supplies and equipment; makes recommendations concerning unit staffing, procedures, and equipment and supply use and needs; prepares long range plans and other management projects as assigned; prepares records and reports; insures that radiologic safety standards are maintained; performs x-ray procedures on cadavers; administers electrocardiograms.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge:

• Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and techniques of taking x-rays;
• Thorough knowledge of the principles of radiation safety;
• Working knowledge of x-ray equipment, its uses and limitations;
• Working knowledge of human anatomy as it relates to taking x-rays;
• Some knowledge of efficient radiology laboratory operation;
• Some knowledge of the principles of supervision and training.

Ability to:

• Schedule, direct and evaluate the work of subordinates;
• Direct the operation of a small x-ray section;
• Take a variety of x-rays;
• Operate and care for x-ray and related equipment;
• Follow and transmit detailed oral and written directions;
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with patients and others contacted in the course of work;
• Prepare solutions and process exposed film;
• Position patients for x-ray procedures;
• Learn and perform x-ray procedures on cadavers;
• Instruct others in the procedures and techniques of radio- graphy;
• Prepare reports.

Training and Experience:  

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be:

• One year of work experience as a certified Radiologic Technologist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of a valid Diagnostic Radiology Technology certificate issued by the State of California.
