DEFINITION

Under general direction, to compound and dispense pharmaceutical drugs and prescriptions; and to do other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Pharmacist is the journey level working class with professional responsibility for items compounded and dispensed from the pharmacy.

TYPICAL TASKS

Compounds, prepares, mixes, packages and dispenses medicines and preparations on receipt of legal prescriptions; labels prescriptions to properly identify and instruct patients regarding usage; provides oral consultation to patients or their agents regarding prescriptions including usage and effects; maintains accurate records of prescriptions dispensed; orders, receives and stores pharmaceutical supplies; consults with physicians and staff to clarify medication orders and to learn of program needs; prepares reports; may act as liaison with the clinic business office to ensure proper billing transactions; inputs, accesses and analyzes data using a computer terminal; may assign, train and evaluate the work of assigned staff.

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Graduation from an accredited college or pharmacy.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid license to practice as a pharmacist in the State of California at the time of employment.
