DEFINITION
Under supervision, to administer the network infrastructure, including data, wireless, and telecom/VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) communications; and to do other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class in the network/communications series. Incumbents perform routine duties under close supervision. Incumbents typically receive direct supervision, rely on higher-level staff to prioritize tasks, and exercise limited judgment. Work performed typically requires interpreting standards, resolving routine issues, and taking appropriate action. Errors are limited to specific assignments or project tasks, and impact is minimal in terms of dollars, lost time, and/or department image.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Completion of at least two courses in Cisco Networking principles / VoIP
OR
One year of experience in a networking or VoIP related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Background Investigation: Some positions may require fingerprinting and/or background investigation.
License: Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C Driver License.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform moderately heavy physical work that includes lifting items up to forty pounds, climbing ladders to work at elevations from 4-12 feet, working in confined/cramped body positions and distinguishing color-coded wires.
Other Special Requirements: Availability to work irregular hours, which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
