DEFINITION
Under general direction, plan, organize, and
direct the operations of the County's medical services in all County adult
correctional facilities; and perform other duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This single position class reports to the
Sheriff’s Chief Deputy (Correctional Division) and is responsible for the
administration, operation, and quality compliance accreditation of the County's
multi-site correctional facility medical services. This position directs
through the subordinate level managers, Corrections Medical Director and
Director of Nursing. While the Chief of Corrections Medical Services is
responsible for the overall direction and administrative operations of
correctional medical services, the Correctional Medical Director directs the
medical quality assurance and medical management of a variety of clinicians.
The Chief of Corrections Medical Services
differs from the classification of Corrections Medical Director in that the
latter is a physician class that provides medical supervision and direction for
corrections medical staff, while the Chief of
Corrections Medical Services directs the overall administrative operations of
correctional facility health care programs.
TYPICAL TASKS
Plans, organizes, and directs through
subordinates, the work of staff engaged in providing medical services,
ancillary services (such as the laboratory, x-ray, and pharmacy), and support
services (such as the business office, medical records, and clerical services)
in the County's detention medical facilities; insures that programs comply with
state, federal, and local regulations; evaluates correctional facility medical
policies, procedures, operations and programs, formulates improvements and
implements changes as needed; works with staff of other divisions, departments,
and agencies in the development of joint procedures, program planning, and
resolution of administrative problems; works with department staff to develop,
monitor and control the corrections medical budgets; works with department and
other County staff to develop and implement medical services policies and
protocols for the correctional facilities; monitors changes in rules and
regulations of funding revenue resources;
informs supervisor of changes and problems pertaining to various
correctional facility medical operations and services; cooperates with
Sheriff’s Office management staff to provide quality medical services while
still maintaining safety and security within the facilities; directs
collections and analysis of program data; analyzes workloads and develops
criteria for determining personnel needs; selects, assigns and evaluates the
performance of subordinate staff; develops position statements for presentation
to the Board of Supervisors and other agencies; promotes desirable community
health actions based on departmental objectives; provides technical advice and
consultation to other County Departments, partner agencies, committees and
groups; collaborates with various community health programs relevant to the
jail; attends meetings and conferences; and prepares reports and
correspondence.

Any combination of education and experience
that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, unless
otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would
be:
Five years of progressively responsible
administrative experience in medical services, including one year of health
program development and evaluation, and two years of supervisory experience,
which does not need to be in a corrections setting. A Master's degree in
business or public administration may be substituted for one of the five years
of required administrative experience.
