DEFINITION

Under direction, provides for the care, welfare, custody and rehabilitation of juvenile detainees in the juvenile hall on an assigned shift and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program; and does other work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Group Supervisor I is the trainee class in the series. Incumbents initially work under close supervision, learn the procedures of caring for and counseling juvenile detainees in custody and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program subject to various shift assignments. Incumbents are expected to promote to the next level of Group Supervisor II after gaining experience and demonstrating the required level of proficiency.

Group Supervisor II is the full journey level expected to carry out a wide range of responsible work assignments on a shift with a minimum of direction. This class is distinguished from Senior Group Supervisor in that the latter is responsible for leadwork responsibilities, program planning and operation of a unit.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Group Supervisor I: Coursework in psychology, sociology, or other behavioral science, or experience involving the supervision, care or leadership of juveniles or adults.

Group Supervisor II: One year of experience performing duties comparable to a Group Supervisor I in Santa Cruz County.
