DEFINITION
Under general direction, to plan, organize, analyze, direct and coordinate departmental administrative services including budget preparation and administration; to plan, organize, analyze, direct and coordinate departmental programs; and to do other work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in the Senior Departmental Administrative Analyst series are characterized by assignments which include responsibility for administration of complex departmental budgets including budget preparation and responsibility for managing departmental programs including staff supervision. May act for the Department Head in their absence, as assigned. This class differs from the lower class of Departmental Administrative Analyst by the full time assignment of ongoing program responsibility and budget responsibility. This class differs from the ASO series by the assignment of program responsibility in addition to budget responsibility.
TYPICAL TASKS
Plans, organizes, analyzes, directs and coordinates departmental budgetary and fiscal control programs including budget preparation, coordination and control; conducts studies and prepares reports on departmental and inter-departmental operations including procedures, information systems, staffing, facilities and space, and organizational structure; prepares and administers grants and contracts including the financial and program components, as assigned; conducts needs assessments and assists department administration to prepare long range program plans; may serve as the staff representative to commissions, committees and task forces; plans, organizes and directs the work of subordinate staff; selects, trains and evaluates subordinate staff; monitors revenue generation, then plans and coordinates the development of new or additional sources of revenue; as appropriate; identifies management information requirements, then recommends computerized systems as appropriate; may oversee and coordinate data processing systems operating in the department and act as a liaison with data processing to change or upgrade the system; researches legislation and prepares reports and recommendations; plans, organizes, analyzes, directs and coordinates departmental programs on an ongoing basis or for complex special projects; may act for the Department Head in their absence, as assigned; attends and/or conducts meetings and conferences; prepares detailed written, oral and graphic reports; may use a personal computer to store, retrieve and analyze data.

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
Equivalent to graduation from college with completion of courses in business or public administration or related and three years of administrative or staff experience which includes responsibility for budgets and some experience as a supervisor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions may require possession of a valid California Class C Drivers License or the employee must be able to provide suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
