DEFINITION

Under general direction, to plan, develop, review, monitor and evaluate health education programs for the Health Services Agency; to be responsible for major health education projects; to supervise subordinate health education staff; and to do other work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This single position class is responsible for planning, developing, monitoring and evaluating health education programs for the County. This class is distinguished from the Health Educator class in that the incumbent is responsible for the preparation and administration of health education programs and budgets. In addition the incumbent supervises other health educators and clerical personnel.

TYPICAL TASKS

Plans, develops, organizes, coordinates, and evaluates health education programs and activities; performs budget analysis and prepares grant and budget proposals for new and continuing health education and related health programs; monitors program cost effectiveness; selects, trains, schedules and evaluates subordinate staff; develops the policies, procedures and protocols for health related public relations and media interfaces; assesses public health education needs, designs or redesign programs and establishes program priorities; supervises the collection of data necessary to identify problems and design health education programs; provides technical assistance to employees and community groups on health education issues and activities; identifies community resources and coordinates, motivates and utilizes resources to implement health education programs; coordinates the development and presentation of special conferences, meetings, health promotional programs and other educational programs; serves as an internal consultant for other personnel conducting health education and health promotion activities; directs program for fulfilling requests from the public for speakers, films and literature pertaining to community health; provides training and orientation of new employees in regard to health education practice, trends and resources; originates, prepares and disseminates health education reports, bulletins, news releases and radio public service announcements; contacts private industry and community agencies to promote and provide assistance on health education programs; inputs, accesses and analyzes data using a computer.

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

Three years of experience in public health education, promotion or related field which would provide the knowledge and abilities listed above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a Master's Degree in Public or Community Health Education from an accredited college as required by the State of California Department of Public Health.

Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's license or the incumbent must be able to provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority.
