PURPOSE:

To define when tests must be retaken and when tests may not be retaken.

LEGAL BASIS:

Civil Service Rules Section V.H., Frequency of Examinations

POLICY:

  1. Candidates who have taken the written, oral, training and experience or performance portion of an examination may not take the same examination until 90 calendar days have elapsed from the original examination date. This provision does not apply to equivalent forms of the same examination.

  2. The Personnel Director determines if a candidate is required to retake portions of an examination that they have already passed (depends on the similarity of exam content). The entire examination must be retaken after 180 days have elapsed from the original examination date as long as the applicant reapplies for the recruitment.

  3. If an individual has been continuously employed in a class for the County of Santa Cruz which requires the same or higher skill level, the Personnel Director may waive this retake provision (i.e. Transfer/Demotion requests).

PROCEDURE:

  1. New Applications

When applicants are scheduled through the applicant tracking system, the applicant’s recruitment history is studied to determine if he/she has taken the same examination component within the last 90 calendar days.

    1. Determine if the same examination has been administered within the last 90 calendar days.

1.                  If the same examination has not been administered within the past 90 calendar days then all applicants meeting the qualifications shall be invited to the examination.

2.                  If the same examination has been administered within the last 90 calendar days proceed to procedure I.B below.

    1. If an applicant has taken an examination component within 90 calendar days, the applicant is notified that they will remain on the current list with their original score and that they are unable to take the same examination pursuant to the Civil Service Rules.
