472 – Green IT Policy
A. Summary
This policy describes how the County
of Santa Cruz will reduce waste and wasteful use of IT-related resources,
including paper, electricity, and technology-related equipment.
B. Goals
This policy is designed to:
1. define practices by ISD to reduce waste
2. define practices by County-wide staff to reduce waste
3. focus on Information Technologies, including, but not limited to, printers, PCs, monitors, and servers.
C. Exclusions
This policy does not cover County
Green policies outside the scope of Information Technology services.
D. Applicability
This policy applies to all County
employees and Elected or Appointed Officials.
E. Policy Statement
The County of Santa Cruz will make purchasing recommendations based on conserving energy and reducing waste. ISD will build and support hardware configurations designed to support the goals of this policy. ISD will work with County Departments to implement conservation practices without impacting the business needs and requirements of the departments.

Policy
Statement Specifics
1. All network printers are configured with duplex printing as the default.
2. ISD recommends network, not desktop printers.
3. All County desktop PCs and monitors are shut down at close of business day by ISD-operated software, if not by the individual users. Exceptions have been arranged with business units. Exact shut down time has been determined by business units.
4. All County PCs are configured to power down monitors after 15 minutes of inactivity. Same exceptions are noted above.
5. All new monitor purchases are LCD monitors.
6. ISD recommends Energy Star devices where possible, such as the current PC configuration for EPEAT Gold, Energy Star 4 configuration from HP.
7. ISD is purchasing and configuring virtualized servers with network storage in place of standalone physical servers. Requesting department will need to apply for an exemption to ISD Management.
8. ISD implements, where possible, on demand printing and electronic distribution of data rather than automatic paper printouts.
G. Responsibilities
Anyone using County IT services from ISD must adhere to this policy.
H. Exemptions
Laptops are exempt from automated shutdown.
Exemptions are granted by ISD Management on a case by case basis.
