PURPOSE:
To define the requirements for appointment of Student Workers.

Federal and California State Child Labor Codes
County Code Section 4.10.020 Classification
4.15.020 Appointment Procedures
Class specification for Student Worker I - IV approved by the Civil Service Commission.
POLICY:
- Student Workers are employed by Santa Cruz County based upon their
student status listed below. If subsequent to employment processing, a Student Worker becomes ineligible, they must be terminated by the hiring department immediately.
- Student Status:
An individual is considered to have student status if:
- are an undergraduate enrolled in a minimum of 9 semester, or 9 quarter units; or
- A graduate student enrolled in a minimum of 9
semester, or 10 quarter units.
- All appointments require a copy of a current validated registration form. Appointments made during school breaks require a copy of the most recent registration form and if employment is ongoing, a copy of the new registration form when it becomes available.
- Student Worker Level:
-
Student Worker I - currently enrolled in high school; (OR)
graduating senior through September of the current year.
- Student Worker II - college freshman or sophomore standing.
- Student Worker III - college junior or senior standing.
- Student Worker IV - graduation from a four year college or
university and enrollment in an accredited post graduate program.
Work assigned will be appropriate to the tasks listed in the student
worker class specifications. Otherwise, the departments will consider an appropriate standard County job class.
- Student Workers are employed in an extra-help capacity only.
- Student Workers will not be allowed to work prior to proper processing and approval by the Personnel Department.
PROCEDURE:
- Documents submitted for approval include:
- A completed County application;
- Proof of enrollment in school (i.e. validated registration form,
student validation form, work permit);
- An original copy of the work permit is required for Student
Workers ages 12 - 17;
- A memo stating the duties that the Student Worker will be performing. Guidelines: duties should be appropriate for the level of Student Worker; and the area of study for Levels III and IV.
- A completed Personnel Action Form; and F. A copy of the Student Worker Work-site Agreement (PER133)
